Geocities is Now Dead

Geocities.com is now dead. That's right, the popular free hosting provider has been dumped. Yahoo announced quietly that there will be no new Geocities sites any longer. I've been building websites for a long time, and some of my fondest memories of learning the trade have been building crappy angelfire and geocities websites for friends, bands and more. It's funny to me that people still use the free hosting source, but it's not too out of the ordinary, I guess. It's a sad day for free tech though, that's for sure.

Yeah, this was a wakeup call for me the other day. I logged into geocities to dig around for some old files and saw the post that it was all going away. After Yahoo/SBC/AT&T/The Empire pulled the plug on Yahoo Launchcast radio and Yahoo Briefcase, I guess it was inevitable that they'd get rid of the free hosting (although lets be realistic, how far can you really get with 15 meg of free hosting space these days?)
I just hope they don't get rid of the free email too...

BTW - that repeating cartoon of the guy mashing his head on the keyboard is really starting to freak me out...
